The big birthday party
While we celebrated Cole's first three birthdays with great ferver, this year, we decided to take it further afield and have a longer guest list. I invited everyone from Cole's class and all but 1 came. Add those to the list of close friends and we had the makings of an epic 3 and 4 year old kid cyclone. Thankfully, one of his friends' birthday is the same week (and the actual day of the party) so we combined the parties and the craziness started to make sense, sort of.

Happy Birthday, Cole!
Cole is 4 today. Once again, he is sick. Since he had the RSV in January of 2009, he has been susceptible to respiratory infections, pneumonia, etc. It seems like every time he gets the sniffles, he is almost immediately wheezing too. So, on this birthday, he is enduring yet another round of nebulizer treatments and his Daddy and I are dispensing medication like a card dealer in Vegas. This has been an ongoing trend every month since November. If I really think about it, he is probably well for 2 weeks out of every month. So, he has been healthy for only 8 weeks since Halloween. How depressing is that? This is also why it is hard for me to stick to a gym schedule. I can't take him to the Kids Club when he is sick. Anyway, enough talk about sickness. My Big Kid is a really BIG KID today!
He seemed up to it so I got him dressed and ready for school. Today was the first day back to preschool since the blizzard on the 4th of February so we were both ready to go back. So, off to school he went with belated Valentine's Day Cards in hand to enjoy an abbreviated Valentine's Day party so I skipped the birthday cupcakes that would have normally been on my to-do list.
When I picked him up, I took him and Rhys to Friendly's for lunch. They both ordered pink sugary drinks, sodium and fat-laden meals (Rhys actually didn't eat at all - he was too excited to be sitting on the booth seat next to his brother), and the meal was topped off with an ice cream sundae delivered by singing waitresses. He really liked it and only got embarrassed at the tail end of the song. I took him to the library after that and let him pick 3 movies to borrow. Since he is sick, I decided to give him a movie day tomorrow so he will get some rest. After naps, he had spaghetti dinner under a canopy of streamers and balloons, ate chocolate cake drowning in fudge frosting and sprinkled with multi-colored sugar bits and opened his presents.

One of the highlights was when Chris brought in the mail and he had cards and a package from my Aunt Ellie (Shout out to Aunt Ellie and Uncle Gary). He tore open the packaging and pulled out a bundle of what he calls his "treasures". They were carefully packaged trinkets including a Star Trek "communicator" that emits a red light from the tip, an Indiana Jones spoon that also emits a red light, an Ice Age squirrel bobble-head pencil topper, and a wrist band with a small guitar hero game where a watch would be. He adores them all and I let him take them to bed with him. I hope I don't have to go and confiscate his treasures before morning.
I still cannot believe that he is already 4. I am so proud of him, proud to be his mom, and hopeful that his health improves and we somehow break the cycle of respiratory illnesses. Roll on, Spring!

The big digout and big boy beds
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the historical snowfall that we have experienced here over the past month. It started snowing on the 5th of February and we got 31 inches. 4 days later, it snowed again and we got an additional 20 inches. Today, February 16th, the trash collectors came for the first time since February 3rd. I haven't seen any delivery trucks except for the US Mail and I doubt a UPS truck could make it down our street and then back up again. It is truly remarkable.
I also would be remiss if I didn't mention the One Enchanted Evening Gala that I chaired for Jeremiah Chiappelli's campaign for Delegate. The event went off without a hitch - snow and all - and everyone had a great time. We even made a little money which makes it all the sweeter.
Now, onto even more remarkable news: Cole is turning 4 on Thursday. WOW. He got a room makeover as his gift. He wanted bunk beds and I wanted to paint a magnetic chalkboard in his room. He got both. I painted his walls from blue to yellow - his choice - and did the chalkboard paint. I also framed a collage of his artwork including his very first finger painting and his most recent painting and hung an old Spoleto poster that I had that featured animals being showered with roses after a musical performance. I also cropped some photos from an old zoo calendar and used collage frames to display them. The room has lots of animals but there is really no theme. He loves it and so do I.

Finally, since Cole has moved into a new bed, Rhys now is in a big boy bed! I don't know if I can cope with getting rid of a crib and lighting 4 candles all in one week. My boys are growing up so fast that I can barely hold on tight enough to the handle bar of this roller coaster for fear of being thrown off! They should tell you to "fasten your seatbelt" when you have children. Here is my big little man napping in his big boy bed.

MORE SNOW!
I posted my heading in all caps because I am seriously YELLING that we have MORE SNOW! Being from South Carolina, I always get a ping of excitement when I hear that snow is coming. I always thought it took the perfect atmospheric conditions to make snow happen. It is either rain, freezing rain, sleet, or snow and snow is the most delicate one of all which always translated to "hard to make" so I always assumed that it was rare. Let me tell you, it is NOT rare. At my house, we have gotten over 60 inches of snow this season. As a frame of reference, that is almost as deep as I am tall. My best friend, Kelly - shout out to Kelly - is addicted to snow. The very idea excites her and I told her on Thursday that she should come up and be snowed in with us. She laughed and then we ended our conversation. A few hours later, she called to say that they were coming! It has been a wonderful snow adventure with 4 little boys to play in it, wonder at it, and be buried by it. We got 31 inches in this dump and they can wade through it, and crawl across it. They love it. Cole gets tired of it quickly but Kelly's boys could stay out there all day.
